A lot of parents have the same problems when potty training their toddlers. In the last few decades the average age for getting out of diapers in this country has soared from 18 months to almost 3 1/2 years!
It isn't that children have gotten more difficult or anything like that, but life is more hectic and parents have never been in need of more help. After helping parents like you for the last three years on our website, we've learned that most parents struggle with the same following four questions:
What is the best time to potty train my child?
There is no right answer for this. They are ready when they're ready. Having said that, the probably ready now and have been for some time. Most parents way too long. This renders the process more difficult than it needs to be and invites far more struggle than is necessary. As long as your child can follow simple commands until you whenever an accident, you should seriously think about trying.
What do I need to get started with toilet teaching?
The essentials of course: a potty chair, books to read with your child that explain the process of elimination and friendly terms of they can understand, and plenty of wipes. but you also need the right mindset. It's important to understand the this is a process, not an event. You will have pickups and there probably will be accidents. That's okay, it's no reflection on you as a parent or the behavior of your child.
What if I can't potty train my child?
It's funny how many parents think this. When was the last time you saw a high school student wearing diapers? You don't. It doesn't happen. We learn to use the toilet one way or another. Toilet training is in a matter of if, it's a matter of when. No this and the finish line probably won't seem so far away.
How long will potty training take?
Again, there is no one universal answer to this question. Toilet mastery takes a long as needed, depending on household environment, disposition of child, emotional fitness in the family, and the directions given by parents. It can happen in a day, or maybe a week. Just get started and stay determined. Your child will be potty trained in no time!
Potty training is probably easier than you're giving it credit for. Don't allow a silly fear to stop you from ditching the diapers for good.
